Time Machine

The New York Times profiles a comic book shop in Chelsea that's still thriving.

From the article...

The local comics shop, where clocks tick slower and business doesn’t start until midday, is a fading city institution. But Time Machine, on the second floor of an old 14th Street walk-up in Chelsea, prevails.

Paint peels from the ceiling, and the carpeting is dark with filth. The customers and the staff sometimes engage in as much conversation as commerce. Come Christmastime, a visitor might be offered a drink. Middle-aged men form the backbone of the store’s clientele, but all types ring the street-level buzzer to ascend.

The store’s specialty is its back-issue collection: obscure tattered titles like Fly Man and Adventures of the Jaguar, underground comics from the ’60s, vintage Silver Surfers and Fantastic Fours. More valuable still might be Roger Williams, the animated and salty owner, well known for his expertise. Indeed, many know the place as Roger’s Time Machine.
